DANI NOLDEN OF SHADOWSIDE!! THE CHRONICLE!!!

Dani Nolden of Shadowside!!!

By Darkzen

Dani Nolden, one of the most unique and strong female voices ever heard, they combine influences of Hard Rock, Thrash and Heavy Metal and are known for their strong hooks, heavy guitars and high energy live show!!

Thank you very much for this opportunity! Dani! Here a little of this great singer!

Darkzen ask;

Dani Nolden tell us who is? as formed within the metal scene? what are
your origins?

Dani: I was born and raised in Santos, Brazil, it's an island about
one hour away from São Paulo, where you will immediately stand out in
the crowd if you go out wearing your black band t-shirt since everyone
else is so tropical and colorful (laughs). This is the land of surfing
and soccer but people are very friendly. However society can be very
harsh to a young aspiring musician here, especially if said musician
intends to be in a heavy metal band. I remember back when I was in
school and my teachers and classmates would ask me what I would do
after finishing school, what college I would go to... and everytime
I'd say "I'm not going to college, I'm going to be a professional
musician". It was always awkward. Some people looked at me with pity
in their eyes as they though "poor girl, she's a dreamer", some others
laughed straight up in my face, my teachers would try to make me
explore my "potential" better. I have to say all that kinda made me
want this even more because at that point I just wanted to prove
everybody wrong and I did. Now a few years after that, concerts in 21
countries and 3 albums later, I'm living the dream and they're looking
like idiots (laughs). I started listening to heavy metal thanks to my
cousin who introduced me to bands like Guns n' Roses and Skid Row.
After that I started searching for heavier stuff on my own like Judas
Priest, Iron Maiden and Helloween which later escalated to Anthrax,
and more recently bands like In Flames. As my passion for that type of
music grew, so did my drive to be a metal singer and it all came to a
point that I just couldn't see myself doing anything else other than
living and breathing heavy metal 24/7.

tell us what you like and dislike Dani Nolden?

Dani: I love music, as you can see (laughs)! But I also like animals,
computer games, martial arts and books. I'm fascinated by books. All
of them. Give me a book, any book and I won't drop it until I finish
it. I may hate it after I'm done but I will read it (laughs). There
are probably lots of things that I dislike but when we're talking
about music and musicians, if there's one thing that really gets on my
nerves is when musicians treats their fans badly and justify it by
saying they're having problems or a bad day or whatever. That's kinda
like going to work and taking your problems out on your clients...
however your fans are even more important than just "clients", people
have a very intimate relationship to their music and there's nothing
more disappointing than being treated poorly by those who you admire.

you have a favorite band? as was formed Shadowside?

Dani: I have many favorite bands, they change oftenly (laughs). My
favorite band today was Killswitch Engage as I spent the whole day
listening to them, it's a "new" band that I like very much. However my
favorite tomorrow might be an old favorite like Deep Purple or Pink
Floyd. Shadowside started as a way for my friends and myself to bring
some ideas to life... we never really expected this band would become
what it is today, and we're still growing! I never expected it, that's
for sure. I knew I wanted to be a musician but I didn't know it would
be on this band. We started mostly as a studio project recording a
demo EP. Then we sent to a few magazines and concert promoters and
turns out they liked it a lot so we realized it would be worth to
start playing a few gigs and see where it would take us.

which is the inspiration for the songs? you write them?

Dani: I've been writing all the lyrics lately but that's not because I
want it that way, it's just that the guys have been lazy as hell when
it comes to writing lyrics (laughs). That's fine as long as I have
enough ideas for me but if they ever feel like writing, I'll enjoy
reading and singing their ideas as well. When it comes to the music,
we all do it together as we nowadays like to make sure the whole band
has a say in every song we create. Our guitarist Raphael and I came up
with half the initial ideas each for Inner Monster Out, however none
of our demos that we presented to the rest of the band sound like what
you hear on the album. We all changed everything. And we didn't stop
working on the songs until we were all happy with the results,
especially because none of us like the same things and have very
different influences. Our goal was to mix all our tastes into one
thing that would sound unique, that we all would be pleased and proud
of, and would have fun performing it on stage. So Shadowside happened,
a crazy mix of thrash, power metal and hard rock that in the end
sounds heavy, modern, melodic yet doesn't step away from our roots and
from what traditional heavy metal is all about. We don't think about
whether people will like it or not, because we feel it wouldn't be
authentic. If we're happy with what we're doing, we'll always find
people who share our tastes and enthusiasm for our work. In the end,
we are our own inspiration... when we give each other ideas on each
other's songs, we end up forcing ourselves to think differently,
outside the box instead of just redoing our own personal formulas.

The lyrics are all about personalities, day to day situations, dreams,
fears, perversions, they are kinda like my own personal diary... on
Inner Monster Out, the whole idea behind the record was to bring to
light a journey through people's minds... all aspects of it, good and
bad. It's my way of saying that we are all disturbed and crazy in one
way or another when you look closely. No one is normal and that's
exactly what "normal" is.

we want to convey with his songs? Shadowside that offers to the world?

Dani: I guess we don't think of ourselves that highly (laughs). I
don't think we ever stopped to think about that... at least I haven't,
to be honest. What I personally want to offer with Shadowside is the
best music that myself and my band buddies can create and the best
live show we can ever perform. We are explosive on stage and we want
to give our fans intensity and the feeling of a great party, of
escaping all their issues with a lot of screaming, singing and
headbanging. Maybe some of my lyrics can be of help to someone, make
them think and realize they're not alone. I remember people telling me
that songs such as Believe in Yourself or Hideaway changed their
lives... more recently someone told me they didn't know someone else
felt like them and that listening to Gag Order made them feel better
because they noticed there were others in the same situation. I'm
always writing about real life situations. Sometimes not about my own
life, but about people close to me for example. So my lyrics are
always real and people can relate to them.

what type of voice you have??? your vocal range?

Dani: I'm contralto with a four octave range. My lowest note is
actually what a typical lowest baritone note would be but I never used
it in a song because I don't like how it sounds, maybe I should work
on it to see what happens but right now, it's too weak. Being able to
reach it is just for entertainment purposes (laughs). However I can
sing songs that were originally written for a tenor voice, which is
the highest main male vocal type, as well as most mezzo soprano songs,
which is the female voice in between contralto and soprano. My voice
is dark and deep, meaning I'm not fit for cute stuff. I was made for
heavy metal (laughs).

you would like to sing with someone special? favorite singer??

Dani: It would be really cool to do a duet with someone like Sebastian
Bach or Lana Lane, my favorite male and female singers respectively. I
already had the honor to share the microphone with singers like Ripper
Owens and more recently on Shadowside's album Inner Monster Out, with
the swedish trio Björn from Soilwork, Niklas from Dream Evil and
Mikael from Dark Tranquillity so I consider myself pretty lucky
already to have been able to be in such good company!

video clip? some Latin American tour??

Dani: I hope so! We already have the Angel with Horns videoclip
available on YouTube, I'm not sure if we'll do another one but a Latin
American tour is definitely something we want to do very soon! We are
playing a lot around Brazil around the moment and it's a sure thing
we'll hit Europe and USA again, but I would really like to play some
Latin American countries, it's our home continent and it would be a
dream come true for me!

Rock or Metal you prefer?
Dani: Both! There's a moment for each for me. I like nearly everything
in the rock and metal scope, from Pink Floyd, which is one of my
favorite bands to modern stuff like Disturbed and Rammstein. I can
find the perfect soundtrack in Rock and Metal for every moment in my
life.

the last words are all yours! for readers of Rock & Metal World Magazine!!
Dani: Thank you very much for the support, I hope everyone is enjoying
Inner Monster Out! Play it very loud, bang your head like crazy and I
hope to see you when we come to your country. Stay Metal and have fun!

Natalia Kempin is Arcane Grail!

Natalia Kempin is Arcane Grail!!

By Natalia Kempin/Darkzen

First of all I want to thank my friend Natalia Kempin by to do this together!

Singer of russian sympho extreme metal band ARCANE GRAIL in search for the band/projects in Germany (lyric-dramatic soprano. Manners: operatic, "clear", growling)

Photographer (aka Natalia Die Hexe), reporter and vice-editor of www.heavymusic.ru

Freelance photographer for: Legacy - the Voice From The Dark Side Magazine, soundshock.com, powermetal.de, metalstorm.net, lady-metal.com .

Designer (graphic, dessous) and Photomodel

Actually those are the band Arcane Grail! Here some of them!

A band from Moscow Russia, is organized in December 2001, his style is Black Metal with elements of Doom and Death Melodic male and female voice with the meaning of the name means striving for an ideal psychological need in the way that the pursuit of spiritual perfection discovery "Grail" gives the divine power and wisdom mythological image of the Grail itself.

But here Natalia tell us a bit more about it;

Darkzen:

Tell us a little bit more of Arcane Grail!

Natalia: Aha... this is pretty popular question... Well, band was founded by Demether in 2001. I joined Arcane Grail in 2004. At that moment I just left my very first band, which I found through the russian metal magazine Dark City and which name I cant remember. Already:). With that band we recorded only one demo, after which we were noticed by one successful promoter in Moscow, who started to organize us gigs with quite legendary russian metal bands. But as it often happens, fast success spoiled everything, and I left that band and a little bit later joined Arcane Grail... Actually me and Demether studied in the same university, but didnt know of each other... One of his friends, Lidia, came to apply for a job at the same firm, where I worked, and later she introduced us to each other... Actually, she is also a singer and at that time she had a band Concordia. She invited me to work over the few Nightwish covers for Nightwish tribute concert, where she participated with her band, and at the same rehearsal was also Demether, who was supposed to growl (I think we rehearsed some songs from “Oceanborn)”. When he heard my singing, he invited me to join his band – Arcane Grail. So, I did, and together we recorded our first album...

Which genre or style you are playing?

Natalia: its also a very popular question. I will leave it unanswered, because there are a lot of discussions around this topic, and its always fun to read them.

What's behind the name Arcane Grail?

Natalia: I bet, that behind this name hides everything, what Demether imagined, when he had to sit and consider, which name will have his band, hehe.

Who are the members of the band? Tell us about each!

Natalia: well, there are 6 of us. One is owner of a musical label Grail Light Productions, another one – currently leaves in Germany, works as a photographer, photomodel and learns martial arts. Third one is a student and gonna be cool sound engineer one day. So, next albums of Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Behemoth,   Within Temptation and other known bands will be mixed and mastered at his studio for crazy money. Else we have one more photographer and a biker. Biker is a real bandit and whenever our band needs some kind of protection, kinda alike its in series Sons of Anarchy on TV, he is always there with his pack of bastards of steel.

Who plays which instrument you have to guess on your own...

Who writes the songs? Where do you find inspiration? Do songs have ideals or beliefs of band members?

Natalia: songs are getting composed by the band. Each member is allowed to bring the ideas into the working process. Texts are mainly written by Demether, he is Walking Wikipedia, so, its quite easy for him to write texts. At “Arya Marga”, our 2nd album, texts are partly written by me. Concerning inspiration... I dont know wheret Demether finds inspiration, but I find inspiration in my life experience...even when everything is bad …

And of course songs have beliefs of band members... Demether at least writes the texts about how he sees the world, this or that situation and entwines it with all the mythological stuff he reads/knows about. I usually write about the sensual part, describing, for example, the way I would have used to kill someone who betrayed me or lied to me;)...

The cover of your latest LP means?

Natalia: I have no idea... Let it mean whatever you think about when you listen to our music.

Natalia , how does it feel to be a vocalist of extreme metal band?

Natalia: awesome. When I am on the stage, I can push out all my agression, when it comes to such songs as “Imprisoned In The Greatest War” (where I use growling style of singing)... and than to switch to more calm mood as in “Of Snake And Raven” song (where I use classical manner of singing). Actually, it makes my presence on the stage pretty unique. Not much singers can do opera style and growling at once and to have no problems with. I dont have any problems...

Pity, that since I am living in Germany, it happens not often that I tour together with Arcane Grail. But last January we did, and it was great. Netherbird, a great black metal band from Sweden was with us, and I must say they are totally cool guys!... I performed with them at 2 shows, representing “Forever Mornful” song. I hope we will perform together again. And actually I would like to work with them as a vocalist. They are cool – I love their music.

A video clip?

Natalia: if you pay us the production's costs ;)...

Darkzen: haaaaa ok

Tell us about your job as a photographer?

Natalia: I am my own boss when it comes to the most of the concert and live shootings I make. Since I am vice editor and representer of one of the most informative and popular russian musical portals about metal – www.heavymusic.ru , I can choose exactly those events and bands which are interesting for me (and of course for the audience), and to contact them about photography. So far there are rarely any big problems about that.

Lately I started cooperation with some print magazines like Legacy and Dark City, and I hope it brings it's benefits in the future.

I have pretty tight schedule, and not often I can find a couple of days, when I can relax doing absolutely nothing. But of course, I know some photographers, who almost live at the festivals. I adore their power;).

There are always concerts and festivals happening around, and if you want to reach something as a photographer, you have to make a good promotion to your work (of course, your work also must be done good!)... visiting as much events as you can;)... Sometimes its pretty much exhausting and stressy, but in the end, you feel closer to your goals, and it makes you happier... When I have nothing to do, I have a feeling of spending time in vain. I dont know if its work or holidays bring me a bigger stress.

I dont want to speak too much about the projects I planned and which I run already now, but everything will be announced in its time. Only one thing: apart from the live and concert photography I am getting more and more into “People Photography”, shooting portraits and fashion stuff.

Funny thing that so far all of that is anyway connected with the music, cause my models are musicians: drummer of Carach Angren, or founder/guitar player of Agathodaimon or their vocalist ...etc.

Lately I also organized a photofirm, -so, lets see what comes out of that;)!

You can have a look at http://talented-pixels.de/ its a site of mine. I currently work over it. Perhaps, the full version will be ready in few weeks. There you can find many additional examples of how my photos are looking like.

I enjoy making photo shootings and I am pretty much open for discussions concerning ideas about them and finding of the best way for cooperation (budget).

Main thing is to always have interest to learn your profession deeper, to investigate more about it... And to improvise when you work. I know some photographers, whose names are everywhere in press, but their photos look like they are tired from what they do [photography], or very standard...

What else would you like to share?

Natalia: good mood? :)

Thanks my friend! a big kiss!

Slovakian Progressive Female Metaller working new music video called from the song "TOYS"

Slovakian Progressive Female Metaller SNOVONNE working on for new music and for new music video for the song called "TOYS" in Florida.

After the finishing THE WEDDING TOUR part. II, SNOVONNE has started to work new video for the song "TOYS"

"'it's gonna hurt a lot less if you call it a game'... Working on the new video for "Toys", coming to you by the end of summer!" Says official facebook site of SNOVONNE

"What's next for Snovonne?
Well, I am currently in Florida finishing off the new video for 'Toys' which is scheduled for the end of summer. Then I'll start working on new material, which I can't wait to get my hands on! In the meantime, Pete, Tuky and Sam are working on things in Europe. We're already planning tours for next year." - http://tragedyaxe.blogspot.fi/2012/08/snovonne-interview.html

Snovonne
Female Progressive-metaller - a singer and songwriter living by turns in Germany, London, USA and Slovakia. Her music combines temperament and unpredictability, orchestral and theatrical monumentality and playful bitterness of language.

Snovonne's Music
A brave mix of temper and heavy riffs with fragile and heart-breaking melodies. Pure elegance in all the dark shades full of expression and emotion. Every word she writes and each note she sings is lived through to the bone. This authenticity makes the Sno-fans personally relate to her – they even translate the lyrics into different languages and present them on their profiles as something that defines their personality. Rock and metal is where Sno feels at home but she usually mixes in elements from different genres. As she says: "it's depending on what the song needs".

It's Sno, Baby - Not Sugar
Was recorded by Sno at her home studio in London. She spent the last days of 2009 in Hannover, Germany with Jan Nemec (Magic Minds Music, worked with Celtic Frost, Grave Digger, Running Wild) mixing and mastering the album. "My Sweet Fiend", the twisted rock epic, was post-produced by Ryan Chapin and Chris Domingo (Global Mastering, FL, USA) who've achieved a Grammy award for one of Seal's albums.

The Nightmare Bride
Album is a finely tuned, darkly gothic concept album based around our deepest human dreams and fears. Hard rock and thrash elements combine beautifully with Sno's soaring vocals to create a deeply melodic but heavy sound. The album contains 17 tracks including two singles The Difference and Puppet's Lyric. Both of these songs were released with official video. It also features a unique cover of Sick of It All's Evil Schemer endorsed by Armand Majidi from the band. Continuing the heavy-hitter endorsement theme, the album also includes a duet on Ill Will with Bjorn Strid of Swedish death metal giants Soilwork confirming Snovonne's metal credentials.

'The Nightmare Bride,' is released by Rogue Records America / SORE Media and Snovonne is presenting the concept live on the Wedding tour 2012.

Liudmila Angel of Wichtcraft

Interview with Liudmila Angel of Wichtcraft
by Darkzen

A vocalist in the dark progressive metal band

Thanks Liudmila for this Interview!

Who is Liudmila Angel! Tell us a little about yourself!

I'm an ordinary musician from the coldest country Russia. I'm also a writer. Music is my life, I don't know how I can live withiout music. All my feelings, emotions and dreams I import into my songs. My life here in Russia is not so easy, all the musicians have to work hard to earn enough money. I have a dream to see the world, I like to communicate with different people all over the world, and I'm happy that many of them want to listern to my music. They say, oh I know one of your songs, I like it.

Tell us what your musical influences??
Within the Metal and out of this genre Oh, my favourite band is Evanescence, so ones upon a time I watch the music video on TV, it was "Bring me to life", I thought who is this girl? She didn't look like all these stars from TV, not so slim, not so perfect but she was so beutiful, so sincere and her voice was exellent.

What is your vocal range??
About 2,5 octaves.

What are your hobbies, you have some???

I help homeless animals, I like them and try to do their life more comfortable. I don't eat meat because I want that people understand how it is painfull for them to live in such a kind of prison as a butchery.

You write some songs? If this is how you get inspired??

Now I write all the lyrics of Witchcraft and all the music. I'm inspered by my naightmares and dreams, by my lonelyness and pain.

Tell us a little about your album "The Voice Inside" as it was an album with different songs, which was the theme of each???

Oh, it was our first album and I think that this album is just a kind of the collection of the songs of different periods of our musical life. There was no any conception or one story. Just a namber of songs that we composed and we have in this period.

Tell us a little to the Latino community from his album "Ash"! what is the theme of the album? As this album was born? And we want to convey???

ASH - it is not an abbreviation, it means all that we have after life. In this album we tell one story of one man who talks to us by different voices from the blank noise. He is dead, and he wants to find some unswers to his questions.

Listen to some of the songs contain lyrics that deal with death and what may or may not happen after this. It is based on their particular beliefs? or based on the history of the album?
It based on the story of the album.

That means the disc artwork??

It is a tree that is made of human bodies that are going to turn to ash. It doesn't matter who you are while you are alive because after the Death we all will turn to ash. I created this art-work by myself.

The violin is very prominent in his music, for example, the beginning of "Alive" or "Black Water" - Why is the sum of the sound that was not previously? Any plans for more tools in future releases of more atmospheric?

The violin is our important component but not the main. It makes some songs special, more autmospheric. In the new album it will lead ballads.

It feels to be part of a genre like this always being different from the rest of the other commercial bands??

We try to compose such a kind of music that we like, and we have no more promotion, we have no any big label but people find our songs in the internet, they like them. Ofcourse we as every band in the world want to have many big gigs and millions of fans, I think we have enough fans here in Russia, so the world is open for us!

They have already thought the new title of the next album???

The next album will be in Russian language and it's mane is "7".

Some new music video?? A tour here in America???
Now we are working at our new music video to the song "the 7-th sin". If you want to see us in America we will be happy to see your country and your metal-fans!

Thank you very much for your time my friend! The last words are all yours for the readers of Rock & Metal Magazine and Femametal.com!
You should believe in you dreams and follow them. Our way is the only one! We love you! Stay metal

Interview with Elsa Thouvenot (Fenrir)

Interview with Elsa Thouvenot (Fenrir)

by Alice C.

FENRIR is a folk metal band from France. "Echoes of the Wolf" is their debut album via Savage Productions. Elsa Thouvenot, singer and violinist from Fenrir answered us politely to the following questions:

1. First of all can you make a brief story of the band's beginning

The band was created in 2006 by Sylvère Jandel, guitarist and composer. I joined Fenrir in 2007 and since then we had a lot of changes in the line-up. However, we recorded our first EP, Whispers of the Old World, in 2007, and the second, Frozen Flowers, in 2009. Our first album Echoes of the Wolf was recorded in the beginning of 2011. Then we signed with the label Savage Prod (Kells, Benighted Soul)/ Season of Mist, so the album is out since the 20th of April 2012, at last!

2. Could you give some information about each member and their work in the band?

As I said, Sylvère is composer, plays the guitars and also sings. Kévin is our drummer, and Jordan our bass player. Florian, for the guitars, and Bruno, main violinist, are our new members, they arrived after the recording of Echoes of the Wolf. We all take part into the creation of the songs: Sylvère sends us his ideas and we can change things, especially for our own parts.

3. How did you get started in music?

In fact, my parents were both musicians and met each other in an orchestra! So I started in music very young, first with violin lessons. But I have always felt more at ease with singing, and I practiced in choirs, and later I took singing lessons. I still take lessons to improve!

4. Where did the band name Fenrir come from?

Fenrir is a giant wolf in Norse mythology, the son of Loki. We chose this name because mythology and legends from Scandinavia are an important part of the subjects we talk of in our songs.

5. How would you describe your first album Echoes of the Wolf? Where did you get the inspiration for the lyrics?

The album is a mix of many influences, heavy metal, folk melodies with a big place for the violin, and also a mix of voices, female, male sometimes with choirs on some songs. Our inspiration comes from Norse and Celtic mythology, medieval history, and literature with Shakespeare and Tolkien.

6. What other musicians have influenced you from metal and other genres of music?

In metal, we were influenced by Iron Maiden, Eluveitie and Within Temptation for example. Traditional folk music is also an important reference for us, with Tri Yann, a French band from Britanny.

7. How would you describe a live Fenrir performance?

It's a real show, the other musicians wear kilts and war paintings on their faces. In live, our music conveys more energy and joy, and leads the audience to dance and jump!

8.Which outfit do you prefer for the stage?
I usually wear a corset and a long black skirt. I also have a beautiful medieval dress with long sleeves.

9. What does it mean, to you, to play at H'elles On Stage (Lyon,Oct. 5, 2012)?

It will be one of our first big gigs so I'm very excited and a bit frightened too! It will be the opportunity for us to meet other bands and a new audience.

10. What are your plans for the near future?
We are now looking for gigs, we will try to share stage with famous bands. And we will also prepare our next album.

11. Thank you for answering our interview .Is there anything the reader should know that I have not asked?

I think all is OK! It is a pleasure for us to be on your website.
